The cost of your stay during IVF treatment in Thessaloniki

The clinic’s quote doesn’t cover anything else: accommodation, travel, meals or a companion. Here are the figures I give to patients before they book.

Countries are often compared on the basis of treatment costs. For a patient coming from abroad, the cost of the stay can account for a fifth of the total budget. The good news is that in Thessaloniki, it remains reasonable, provided you choose your accommodation wisely. The figures below are approximate figures observed in 2026; they vary depending on the season.

How many nights?

It all starts here. For IVF using your own eggs, you should generally allow for eight to twelve nights: final stimulation checks, egg retrieval, followed by embryo transfer or freezing. For egg donation or a frozen embryo transfer, four to six nights are often sufficient. Further details can be found in how many days to stay in Greece.

Accommodation

  • Mid-range hotel: around €70 to €120 per night; €120 to €180 on the seafront or in high season.
  • Furnished flat: often better value for money for stays of more than a week, with a kitchen and a proper fridge for your medication.

The main consideration is not the price but the distance from the clinic: you’ll have early-morning appointments, sometimes on an empty stomach, and you’ll want to get back to lie down after the egg retrieval. A ten-minute walk or taxi ride is better than a sea view forty minutes away. Also check for a lift and air conditioning in summer.

Transport

  • Taxi from the airport: a flat-rate fare applies to the city clinic, around €25 during the day and €35 at night in 2026. Check the fare displayed at the taxi rank on arrival.
  • Airport bus: route 01X (01N at night) runs between the airport, the city clinic and the railway station every twenty to thirty minutes, for around €2. Handy on arrival; less so on the day of the egg retrieval.
  • In the city: the Thessaloniki metro, which opened in late 2024, runs through the city clinic; taxis are plentiful and inexpensive for short journeys. On the day of the egg retrieval, take a taxi: you must not drive or walk for long periods after the anaesthetic.

Meals and daily life

Thessaloniki is renowned for its cuisine, and it remains affordable: allow €30 to €50 per day per person if eating out for lunch and dinner, less if staying in a flat. Supermarkets and bakeries are everywhere. During stimulation, eat as normal, stay well hydrated, and make sure you have something to nibble on the morning of the egg retrieval for afterwards.

The pharmacy

Don’t forget to include this in your budget: medication at the end of the stimulation cycle, progesterone after the transfer, and sometimes painkillers. Medication prices are set by the state in Greece; see IVF medication in Greece.

Two examples of a stay budget

ItemEgg donation or FET (5 nights)IVF using your own eggs (10 nights)
Accommodation€400 – €600€800 – €1,200
Airport transfers and taxis€60 – €100€80 – €150
Meals (2 people)€300 – €500€600 – €1,000
Total cost of stay, excluding flights€760 – €1,200€1,480 – €2,350

Add flights, which depend on your departure city and the season: book flexible tickets, as the date of the egg retrieval is only known a few days in advance. The cost of the treatment itself is detailed in the price of IVF in Greece.

What really adds to the cost

Rarely the hotel. It’s the unforeseen events: an egg retrieval postponed by two days, a flight that needs changing at short notice, a taxi taken because you don’t know where the clinic is. Good organisation in advance costs less than having to sort these things out later. For my patients, I book accommodation near the clinic, allow for a buffer of two nights, and provide a list of contacts — taxi, out-of-hours pharmacy, clinic — before they set off. Frequently asked questions

How much does a stay for IVF in Thessaloniki cost?

Excluding flights and treatment, expect to pay around €750 to €1,200 for five nights for two people (egg donation or FET) and €1,500 to €2,350 for ten nights (IVF using your own eggs).

How do you get from Thessaloniki Airport to the city clinic?

By taxi, with a flat rate of around €25 during the day and €35 at night in 2026, or by bus 01X (01N at night) for around €2.

Should I book a hotel or a flat?

For stays of more than a week, a furnished flat is often better value. The main consideration remains proximity to the IVF clinic.

Should you book flexible tickets?

Yes, if you’re having IVF using your own eggs: the date of the egg retrieval isn’t known until a few days beforehand. You should also allow for two extra nights.
